Daniel Mattern
Department of English Language and Literature
dmattern@pku.edu.cn

Dr. Mattern grew up in the United States and has spent over a decade teaching undergraduate and graduate students from around the world. He teaches language because he believes that, at its core, language is about communication. When people are learning to speak, read, write, or listen, they are learning to connect with others and their ideas: whether a stranger on a train, a colleague from another country, or an author who wrote a thousand years ago. He works to help students build the skills and confidence to engage with people and ideas from around the world and throughout history. Outside the classroom, Dr. Mattern enjoys exploring new places, looking at art, and spending time with his wife and daughter.
